Fonts and Keyboards for SIL Cameroon documents

SIL Cameroon documents often contain special characters. In the past SIL developed special fonts providing those characters. These days Unicode encoding and Unicode fonts have taken over the older legacy fonts.
When viewing these documents it's best to use the same fonts that were used during the creation of the documents.
If you have a need to create documents yourself using special characters and therefore special fonts it's best to make use of a program that maps keys of your computer keyboard to the various special characters of a specific language. Such a program and the accompanying keyboard mappings are provided by Tavultesoft.
Generally, it's best to install the fonts needed first and then install the keyboards that will use those fonts.

Unicode fonts

The following True Type fonts are designed for use in documents requiring Unicode fonts. Please follow the link to the SIL International home page for each font. Use the instructions found there to download and install the fonts you require (usually, Charis SIL and Doulos SIL are a minimum).
Charis SIL is a serif, proportionally-spaced font optimized for readability in long printed documents.
Doulos SIL is very similar to Times/Times New Roman, but only has a single face - regular. It is intended for use alongside other Times-like fonts where a range of styles (italic, bold) are not needed.
Gentium is a typeface family designed to enable the diverse ethnic groups around the world who use the Latin and Greek scripts to produce readable, high-quality publications. It supports a wide range of Latin-based alphabets and includes glyphs that correspond to all the Latin ranges of Unicode.

Legacy fonts

Many SIL Cameroon documents have been written and encoded using the so called legacy fonts. You may need them on your computer if you want to display these documents correctly. For this reason these fonts are available for downloading here below. But their use is discouraged for new documents.

  1. if Paratext is used
  2. if access to a legacy font is needed.

Editing special Unicode characters of Cameroonian languages

There are various ways to to enter special characters in Cameroonian texts.
1. Make use of Tavultesoft Keyman keyboard manager and the Cameroon keyboard
A very elegant way when you have to edit Cameroonian texts frequently.
2. Enter the Unicode codepoints manually
This goes rather easily making use of the free program Quick Unicode Input. Also possible with Word's Alt-X method.
3. Enter the bytes directly
By using an editor that supports Hexadecimal mode, like the free Notepad++, you are able to include special characters in your Cameroonian texts.
You may find all pertinent information for the special Cameroon characters in the following document:
